Prelimary Task - Ruby's evaluation :)

The continuity task shows our undertanding of creating a film using various camera shots, equitment and to develop our editing skills.

Once we had chosen a location to film, we followed our story board. We had to decide where to set up the tripod to get the right angles. When filming you have to think quickly and learn to improvise when something may not be going according to plan. During our conversation scene we came across the 180 degree rule. If you film a scene once and keep stopping and starting, skipping from side to side it may come across scripted and the conversation is not fluent. To overcome this problem we filmed the same scene twice using over the shoulder shot.

When watching a scene you dont realise how filming that certain scene goes about. For example; match on action shot, shows someone opening a door from one side however then switches to the opposite side of the door where you are able to see that person walk through. When we filmed from a birds eye view we had difficultly transporting the tripod from place to place so we tried the camera being handheld. Although this didnt't work out as when viewing the footage back, the shot was shakey. We resolved this problem from changing the angle we shot from. The shots appear easy but became time consuming.

When our footage was uploaded to the computer, we used Final Cut Express to edit what we had. Although it was a struggle at first trying to work the software and organising our film. I learnt how to cut out the bits I want, and shorten them to cut out background noise, such as the door closing. I now know how to properly use and edit final cut and create an appropriate soundtrack using garage band.

In conclution working through the difficulties we came across gave us the opertunity to be a team and work together, exploring each others ideas. Even though we had to carry out some scenes a few times to get it how we wanted, in the final footage you can see the difference it made. We got taught about match on action and the 180 degree rule in class and in the prelimary task we got to put our knowlodge into action. I'm glad i have learnt all the little details which didnt cross my mind before, such as the impervising during filming and a better undertanding of using the software. I believe doing this task and creating this short film definatly has prepared me for whats next and will over all make future tasks easier.
